Butts County Historical Society Meeting
Come celebrate The Butts County Historical Society’s many accomplishments of 2021 and take part as we make plans for 2022! We meet the 4th Thur of each month, next being January 27, 2022 at 6:00pm in the historic Flovilla Schoolhouse behind city hall. Join the fun, enjoy refreshments, friendships and learn more about the history of Butts County.
The Butts County Historical Society will meet Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the Flovilla Schoolhouse at 6:00 pm. The guest speaker will be Larry Smith who graduated from UGA with a degree in American History and Social Studies. He has always been interested in American history and lives in the Smithboro community which was settled by his ancestors in the early 1800s. His topic will be “History of Sherman’s Army Crossing the Ocmulgee at Seven Islands”. He will share stories about Sherman’s army’s crossing over from Butts County into Jasper County and then traveling to Hillsboro and Smithboro where his ancestor, Thomas Jefferson Smith was hanged by Union troops on their family farm.
